Overlooking the southern waters, the Barberyn Lighthouse is a magnificent remnant of the 19th century and remains one of Sri Lanka’s more accessible towers. Found on Barberyn Island off the shores of nearby Beruwala. the Barberyn lighthouse is a 20-minute journey from the Dedduwa Boat House – first by road, and then by boat. Accompanied by a local fisherman, your boat will take you to the shores of Barberyn Island and wait for your return trip to the mainland.
This tiny 8 acre tropical island has hosted the lighthouse for over a centuary. Today, Barberyn Lighthouse is one of only four international lighthouses in Sri Lanka. The lighthouse continues to illuminate the seas over a blanket of coconut trees and vacant stretches of sand from a eight of 112 feet. The quiet island also serves as an unlikely destination in itself, open to exploration should you wish to look around during your short visit.
